Research Associate

Contract Position

The Armenian American Museum and Cultural Center of California is seeking a Research Associate to support the development of the new Permanent Exhibition’s Schematic Design. The Research Associate will report to the Executive Director and collaborate with the Project Manager, Exhibition Designer, and Exhibition Committee who will assist in reviewing and providing direction for the development of the exhibition content areas.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct Research – Conduct scholarly research to enhance and illustrate the concepts, themes, and exhibit elements being developed by the Exhibition Designer and stakeholders. This may also include identifying relevant topics, fact-checking, sourcing images and/or objects, and analyzing sources to generate information. Utilize Exhibition Committee and relevant Armenian academic resources and feedback to develop content details and help elaborate topics and themes. Regularly communicate with Project Manager, Exhibition Designer, and museum leadership to develop content and ensure that deadlines are met.
  • Write and Edit Content – Collaborate with Exhibition Designer to draft or edit content approaches, outlines, and experiences.
  • Collaborate on Content Strategies – Collaborate with Exhibition Designer to target content to specific audiences and shape content for visitor-friendly and universally accessible approach (taking into account multiple audiences and perspectives).
  • Coordinate with Writers and Designers – Work with Project Manager, Exhibition Designer, and Exhibition Committee to ensure that the work meets exhibition and institutional goals.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Demonstrated writing skills to compose general correspondence, content summaries, reports, and email memos using clear, concise language.
  • Ability to condense and clarify content to exhibition-appropriate text.
  • Command of English grammar and spelling as well as copy editing and proofreading techniques.
  • Ability to communicate productively, cooperatively, diplomatically, and respectfully in professional and community contexts.
  • Ability to work independently, organize time, set priorities, and perform effectively under deadline.
  • Ability to manage logistical and administrative tasks related to diverse project activities.
  • Ability to manage research assets via a shared cloud platform.

Education & Experience

  • M.A. or B.A. in museum studies, anthropology, folklore, Armenian culture, or a related field with experience in museum-based curatorial practice.
  • Experience managing digital content.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Drive platforms.
  • Familiarity with Armenian Language is preferred.

Contract Position

  • The term of the assignment is the duration of the Schematic design phase currently anticipated to conclude in September 2021.
  • Regular meetings are anticipated with the Executive Director, Project Manager, Exhibition Designer, and senior leadership of the organization.
  • Monthly meetings are anticipated with the Exhibition Committee.
